Dr. Tzipori is the Director of Tufts University New England RBL and Chair of the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health (IDGH). Dr. Tzipori is an internationally recognized research scientist, having pioneered the field of comparative medicine in infectious diseases for the last 30 years. He leads the single largest research entity at Tufts focusing on biodefense, emerging diseases, and global health. Dr. Tzipori led Centrifon in obtaining EPA approval for Method 1623, detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in water.

As part of the national biodefense program, Dr. Tzipori led the Microbiology and Botulism Research Unit of the NIAID’s Food and Waterborne Disease Integrated Research Network and has conducted research on multiple NIAID priority pathogens as well as a myriad of food and waterborne diseases.

Dr. Tzipori’s work has been funded by the NIH, EPA, DOD, FDA, and the CDC. He also received funding from the Gates Foundation to develop thermostable, needle-free vaccines against serious childhood diseases in developing countries. He has authored and co-authored more than 250 research reports and publications.

In addition to serving as Director of the Tufts New England RBL, Dr. Tzipori is a Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Disease at Tufts. He regularly lectures on the global impact of infectious diseases and consults on drug development and animal models. He has served on numerous scientific advisory boards for pharmaceutical, biotech, government, and academia. He is the Agnes Varis University Chair in Science and Society at Tufts.

Dr. Tzipori received both his DVM and PhD in Virology from University of Queensland, Australia. In 1990, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, London. After two years at the International Center for Diarrheal Diseases in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Dr. Tzipori joined the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. Dr. Tzipori’s career-long mission has and continues to be the prevention and mitigation of infectious diseases of global importance.

cloudAbout Continuous Flow Centrifugation

The Centrifon Bio Elutriation Model 3 (BEM3) is a continuous flow centrifugation methodology that allows for the concurrent concentration and processing of protozoa, bacteria, and viruses from large volumes of liquids of any medium. The BEM2 is a portable device that automates this methodology, providing a simple, robust, cost effective platform that requires little to no amount of technical knowledge to operate.

Centrifon's approach represents a significant advance in waterborne pathogen monitoring, greatly assisting water utilities and public health authorities as well as other industry sectors (food, beverages, homeland security) all of which require rapid results for microbial quality and water safety.
